History
Kii-Shinjō Station opened on 20 December 1933 in what is now the city of Tanabe, Wakayama Prefecture, with the extension of the Kisei West Line from Kii-Tanabe to Kii-Tomita. The Kisei Main Line, completed in 1959, absorbed the route. Freight handling ended on 1 October 1971 and baggage on 1 April 1978; the station became unstaffed on 14 March 1985. With the privatization of JNR on 1 April 1987 control passed to JR West, and on 13 March 2021 ICOCA card support was added across the section from Kii-Tanabe to Shingū. The station retains an old wooden station building.
