History
Susami Station opened on 30 October 1936 as the western terminus of the Kisei West Line when JR's predecessor extended track south from Kii-Tsubaki. Two years later the line was pushed on to Esumi and Susami became a through station, and in 1959 the completion of the Kisei Main Line through-route made it a Kisei Main Line stop. The 1987 JNR privatisation transferred control to JR West. A new station building combined with the Susami town community plaza opened in March 2001, and from the October 2004 timetable revision every Kuroshio limited express now stops here. ICOCA acceptance began in December 2016 and the staffed ticket office closed in 2021.

Notes
A temperature gauge on the station building offers lodging-discount coupons to visitors when the 7 a.m. February temperature drops to 1 °C or below — a winter promotion by Susami town.
