History
Usa Station opened on 21 December 1909 as the southern terminus of the Hōshū Main Line when Japanese Government Railways extended track south from Yanagigaura, having nationalised the route's predecessor — the private Kyushu Railway — in July 1907. It became a through-station on 15 December 1910 when the line reached Naka-Yamaga, and on 15 December 1923 the line was renamed the Nippō Main Line. JR Kyushu took control at the 1 April 1987 privatisation. Sugoca acceptance began on 1 December 2012, and on 1 October 2023 the station reverted from outsourced operation to direct JR Kyushu management. About half of all Nippō limited expresses stop here, serving Usa Jingū shrine.

Notes
The station's Roman-letter name "USA" matches the abbreviation of the United States — on 21 January 2017, the day of Donald Trump's inauguration, locals briefly rebranded it "宇佐アメリカン駅" ("Usa American Station") for one-day celebrations.
