History
Wabuka Station opened on 8 August 1940 with the Japanese National Railways' Kisei West Line extension between Esumi and Kushimoto, in the town of Kushimoto, Wakayama Prefecture. It became part of the Kisei Main Line in 1959 when the trunk route between Kameyama and Wakayama was completed. Freight handling ended in 1971, baggage handling in 1984, and the station became unstaffed in 1985. Control passed to West Japan Railway Company at the privatisation of JNR on 1 April 1987. The original wooden station building was replaced by a simple concrete structure in summer 2020, and ICOCA card use began in March 2021. Originally laid out with three tracks, the rails of the third platform were removed by 2011.

Notes
The 1- and 2-platform footbridge was removed in 2016 due to deterioration; to reach the down platform passengers must descend a slope from the station building, pass through a tunnel under the tracks, and climb a newly built stairway on the other side.
