History
Yawatahama Station opened on 6 February 1939 as the new western terminus of the Yosan Main Line, then operated by Japanese Government Railways. It became a through-station on 20 June 1945 when its tracks were joined to the then Uwajima Line at Unomachi, opening continuous service from Takamatsu through to Uwajima. Freight handling was withdrawn on 1 February 1984, parcel service on 1 November 1986, and freight briefly resumed in 1987 — limited to mandarin orange shipments via temporary trains — before being formally discontinued on 1 April 2006. JR Shikoku has operated the station since the 1 April 1987 breakup of Japanese National Railways.

Notes
Yawatahama's station signboard styles it "the westernmost station in Shikoku with the scent of mandarin oranges," and the station is indeed the westernmost in both Ehime Prefecture and the whole of Shikoku.
