History

Maki Station opened on 22 February 1987 as an additional intermediate stop on the existing Nippō Main Line, just weeks before the privatisation of Japanese National Railways. Control passed to JR Kyushu on 1 April 1987. The station was originally staffed only on weekday mornings via a small prefab structure beside the platform; a full station building was completed on 1 December 1993, and ridership had risen from around 400 per day at opening to over 700 by that time, so staff hours were extended from 07:00 to 18:00 and ticket sales for all destinations became possible. SUGOCA service began on 1 December 2012, and on 17 March 2018 the station was converted to a Smart Support Station with remote intercom assistance, ending staffing on site.

Notes

Maki is the first station on the Nippō Main Line out of Nishi-Kokura where no passing loop is fitted, so up- and down-trains cannot cross at the station despite its proximity to the major Ōita Branch Vehicle Centre just to the south.
