History

Nishitetsu Wataze Station opened on 1 October 1938 as Wataze Station on the Kyushu Railway company's line between Kurume and Ōmuta. To distinguish it from the nearby JR Wataze Station, the name was changed to Kyutetsu Wataze on 1 July 1939. After the operator merged with the Kyushu Electric Tramway on 19 September 1942 and was renamed Nishi-Nippon Railway three days later, the station took its current name on 22 September 1942. The station building was rebuilt in 1966. Station numbering (T45) was introduced on 1 February 2017, and following the rollout of a centralised station management system the station was fully unstaffed on 1 April 2021.

Notes

Nishitetsu Wataze is the only station on the Tenjin Ōmuta Line not served by limited express or express trains that still has a 2-island, 4-track layout, originally built so that locals could be overtaken during the morning rush.
