History

Inukai Station opened on 20 July 1917 as the new western terminus of the Inukai Light Rail Line (later Inukai Line), extended from Takenaka by the Railway Bureau. It became a through-station on 27 March 1921 when track was laid west to Miemachi, and by 1928 the line had joined the Miyagi Line reaching east from Kumamoto. On 2 December 1928 the route from Kumamoto through Inukai to Ōita was redesignated as the Hōhi Main Line. JR Kyushu took over on 1 April 1987 at the privatisation of JNR. The station was fully unstaffed on 1 July 2014. Typhoon Talim damaged the line in September 2017, suspending services until operation was restored on 2 October 2017.

Notes

Inukai appears in the manga Detroit Metal City as the hometown station of both the author and the protagonist, and the station was used as a filming location during the 2008 live-action adaptation.
