History

Yoshino Station opened on 16 March 1991 as a new station added by JR Kyushu to the existing Kagoshima Main Line track between Wataze and Ginsui in northern Ōmuta. SUGOCA IC card acceptance began on 1 March 2009, and the ticket window was outsourced to the Ōmuta Tourist Association in April 2010, becoming a kan'i itaku station from 1 April 2016. The ticket window was finally withdrawn on 1 April 2024, making the station effectively unstaffed for ticket sales while still offering IC card use. Only local services stop at Yoshino. The station carries the line number JB25 within JR Kyushu's Kagoshima Main Line numbering scheme.
