History
Asaji Station opened on 20 December 1923 as the new western terminus of Japanese Government Railways' Inukai Line, which had been pushing west from Ōita since 1914. The station became a through-stop on 15 October 1924 when the line was extended to Bungo-Taketa, and on 2 December 1928 the through route from Kumamoto to Ōita was redesignated the Hōhi Main Line. The station was made unstaffed in 1983, the building was replaced in 1993, and control passed to JR Kyushu at the 1987 JNR privatisation. The line was disrupted by Typhoon Talim damage in September 2017 and restored by 2 October that year.

Notes
On 10 March 1924, the boiler of a steam locomotive departing the station exploded, injuring three crew — a notable early incident from the line's terminus period.
