History

JR Kyushu opened Hikarinomori Station on 18 March 2006 as a petition-requested in-fill stop on the Hōhi Main Line between Sanrigi and Musashizuka, straddling the border between Kumamoto City and the town of Kikuyō. The station was built as a modern hashigami (bridge-over) structure with elevator access from both north and south entrances to the single island platform. SUGOCA IC card service began on 1 December 2012. The station became fully JR Kyushu-operated, taking the work back from a subsidiary, on 1 October 2023. A covered footbridge linking the upper level directly to the adjacent Yumetown Hikarinomori shopping centre opened on 30 January 2024.

Notes

On 15 March 2025 the timetable revision withdrew all limited-express stops at Hikarinomori, leaving the station served only by local trains.
