History

Tōkai-Gakuen-mae Station is a JR Kyushu stop on the Hōhi Main Line in the Higashi-ku ward of Kumamoto, opened by Japanese National Railways on 1 November 1986 as an infill station between Tatsutaguchi and Suizenji. It is the only JR rail station in the ward. The university now known as Tokai University Kumamoto Campus contributed part of the construction cost. With JNR's privatisation on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR Kyushu, and on 3 October 2005 a small station building was erected inside the university grounds to manage rush-hour crowding after a fatal student accident; SUGOCA service began on 1 December 2012. The booth closed and the station reverted to unstaffed operation on 12 March 2022.

Notes

The 2005 station building was constructed inside the Tokai University campus precisely because no land was available beside the platform; passengers reach the platform by crossing the adjacent level crossing.
