History
Tano Station opened on 25 October 1916 as an intermediate stop on the new stretch of track that the Japanese Government Railways laid between Kiyotake and Aoidake, connecting the eastward extension of the Miyazaki Line with the line west from Miyazaki. The line was renamed the Miyazaki Main Line on 21 September 1917, and on 15 December 1923 the through route from Shigeoka via Miyazaki to Yoshimatsu — including Tano — was redesignated as part of the Nippō Main Line. Freight operations ended on 1 March 1971 and baggage handling on 14 March 1985, after which the station became unattended. It passed to JR Kyushu at privatisation on 1 April 1987.

Notes
Although Tano is bypassed by almost all limited-express services, one outbound Kirishima service does stop on its morning run to Miyazaki — and its boarding figures still outpace those of the all-stop Nishi-Miyakonojō station immediately to the south.
