History

Undōkōen Station was opened on 18 March 1984 as a temporary stop between Kibana and Sosanji on the Japanese National Railways Nichinan Line. It was built to relieve road congestion on National Route 220 during the Miyazaki Flower Show (now Miyazaki Flower Festa), held at the Miyazaki Prefectural Sports Park to which the station gives its name. It was unstaffed from the outset. At the privatisation of JNR on 1 April 1987 the station was upgraded to permanent status and passed to JR Kyushu. ICカード SUGOCA service is scheduled to begin on 17 January 2026, and the Nichinan Marine Line rapid will start bypassing the station from 14 March 2026.
