History
Mimata Station opened on 11 February 1914 as the eastern terminus of the then Miyazaki Line, which had been extending east from Yoshimatsu. Local councillors had successfully lobbied to divert the route through the village centre rather than via Maeme, and the village shared the land-purchase cost with a local forestry firm. The terminus role lasted only until 15 August 1914 when the line was extended towards Yamanokuchi. The site was incorporated into the Nippō Main Line in December 1923. Renamed Higashi-Miyakonojō in March 1972 and reverted to Mimata in March 1986, the station has been unstaffed since March 1985 and was rebuilt in April 2009. JR Kyushu took it over on 1 April 1987.
