History

Kitagō Station opened on 28 October 1941 as the new northern terminus of the Shibushi Line, which the Railway Ministry was extending north from Aburatsu. Japanese National Railways extended the line further north towards Minami-Miyazaki in stages, completing the link on 8 May 1963; the route through Kitagō was then redesignated as the Nichinan Line and the station became a through stop. Freight handling ended in March 1971 and baggage handling in February 1984. The station sits 32.5 kilometres south of Minami-Miyazaki on the Nichinan Line in the Kitagō district of Nichinan, Miyazaki Prefecture, and its current building is an unstaffed log-house-style structure with wooden fittings. JR Kyushu took over on 1 April 1987.
