History
Shibushi Station opened on 30 March 1925 as the eastern terminus of the then Shibushi Line laid by Japanese Government Railways from Ōsumi-Matsuyama. It later became a hub where the Shibushi Line, the Nichinan Line, and the Ōsumi Line converged. The Ōsumi Line was abolished on 14 March 1987 and the Shibushi Line on 28 March 1987, leaving only the Nichinan Line; the station passed to JR Kyushu on 1 April 1987. On 20 February 1990 the platform was rebuilt about 70 m to the northeast on the site of the former freight siding, with the building reoriented 90 degrees, shortening the Nichinan Line by about 40 m. The station was destaffed around 1992.

Notes
When the Shibushi Line and Ōsumi Line were abolished in 1987, the surviving Nichinan Line was actually shortened by about 40 m at this terminus because the platform was rebuilt on a former freight siding northeast of the old site.
