History

Echigo-Yuzawa Station opened on 1925-11-01 when the Joetsu North Line (the present Joetsu Line) was extended from Shiozawa to the station as its temporary terminus. The line reached Minakami in September 1931, making the station an intermediate stop, and the Joetsu Shinkansen entered service through it on 1982-11-15. The station passed from Japanese National Railways to JR East at privatisation on 1987-04-01. A short branch to Gala-Yuzawa for ski traffic opened on 1990-12-20. From 1997 until 2015 the station was the terminus of the Hakutaka limited expresses running via the Hokuhoku Line toward Kanazawa.

Notes

Inside the CoCoLo Yuzawa station building, the Ponshu-kan complex offers sake from breweries across Niigata Prefecture alongside an indoor bath that blends the local onsen water with sake.
