History
Matsugishi Station opened on 1 June 1897 as a stop on the Sōbu Railway in Chōshi, Chiba Prefecture. The line was nationalised on 1 September 1907, bringing the station under the Japanese Government Railway and later Japan National Railways. The Narita Line was extended from Sasagawa to terminate here on 11 March 1933, making Matsugishi a junction. With JNR privatisation on 1 April 1987, the station passed to JR East. The wooden one-storey station building survives and the station remains staffed under contract to JR East Station Service.

Notes
Express trains do not stop here, but the section between Matsugishi and Chōshi is specifically excluded from the standard junction-station free-ride exemption in JR fare rules.
