History

Atsugi Station opened on 12 May 1926 as the terminus of Jinchū Railroad (forerunner of Sagami Railway), and Sagami Railway (today's JR Sagami Line) linked through on 15 July that year. Despite the name, the station sits in Ebina rather than Atsugi: Jinchū could not afford to bridge the Sagami River and named the station for the city it had promised to reach. The Odakyu Kawaraguchi Station opened alongside on 1 April 1927. Through operation of the Jinchū line to Atsugi ended on 25 November 1941 with the opening of Ebina Station. The Sagami Line was nationalised on 1 June 1944, when the Odakyu station was renamed Atsugi and the operators consolidated under a shared platform.

Notes

Although the station is named 'Atsugi', it stands across the Sagami River from Atsugi city in neighbouring Ebina; Odakyu since February 2012 prints 'Ebina, Kanagawa' beneath the station name to forestall confusion.
