History
Shin-Shimonoseki opened on 27 May 1901 as Ichinomiya Station (一ノ宮駅) on the San'yō Railway between Asa and Bakan (today's Shimonoseki), then sited near Sumiyoshi Shrine. The San'yō Railway was nationalised in 1906 and the line became the San'yō Main Line in 1909. The station was renamed Nagato-Ichinomiya (長門一ノ宮駅) on 1 January 1916 to resolve duplication with other 'Ichinomiya' stations, and relocated to its present site on 19 November 1928 as part of a route change between Chōfu and Shimonoseki. With the San'yō Shinkansen extension reaching here on 10 March 1975 the station took its present name. JR West took over at the 1 April 1987 JNR privatisation, and JR Freight reopened freight handling on 26 March 2016.

Notes
The 1975 opening included Japanese National Railways' first-ever moving walkway, installed in the connecting passage beneath the up-line platform; it was branded the 'Walking Belt'.
