History

Kagoshima Station opened on 10 June 1901 as the southern end of the section first built from Kokubu (today's Hayato) to Kagoshima, sited at the northern edge of the city centre. With the completion of the Yatake No. 1 tunnel on 21 November 1909 the station was finally connected to the national network. The coastal route reached Take Station — later renamed Nishi-Kagoshima and then Kagoshima-Chūō — on 11 October 1913 and absorbed the Kagoshima Main Line name, relegating the original inland route to become the Hisatsu Line. Both the Kagoshima Main Line and the Nippō Main Line have their formal termini here, although in practice trains start and finish at the busier Kagoshima-Chūō, and the station's relative standing has long since fallen.

Notes

Although both the Kagoshima Main Line and Nippō Main Line officially terminate here, most trains in fact start and finish at neighbouring Kagoshima-Chūō, which is known locally simply as "Chūō Station."
